Louisiana Flooding and Mississippi Petrified Forest

Sunday, May 22nd

We left the rally about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night and drove on I-10 to the TX/LA border where we spent the night at a rest stop. On Sunday morning, we continued on through Louisiana and saw lots of flooding, although we had no road problems. We continued along to the Mississippi Petrified Forest in Flora, MS. We stayed in the Petrified Forest campground and toured the forest. This amazing forest shows many tree parts that were alive millions of years ago, but have long-since been turned to stone due to quick burial by soil that resulted in preservation rather than decaying and then the introduction of hardening minerals once buried. This area of Mississippi has had the perfect climate and conditions for the petrifying process, so the petrified wood exists here in abundance.
